Members evening – Take 2,3 or 4 was entertaining!
This was the first time we’d tried a 2,3 or 4 format, in which we encourage speakers to display sufficient material to cover the boards so we have one, two or four speakers on the night. For our inaugural attempt, we had two speakers, both of whom showed material from their collections that amused and entertained in equal measure.
First up was our club Secretary Carol, who told us about her fascination with the philately and colonial omnibus sets of the 1937 International Exposition held in Paris. We were treated to an array of stamps, proofs, souvenir sheets and other material culminating in a range of postcards from the exposition.
Then we enjoyed Alan Totten’s three displays, of Scandinavian material.
First up was a display of the early Swedish Skilling stamps and the story behind their development and use, illustrated with examples of postal history showing how each value was used in practice.
Then, after the break we saw mare material but this time one two different topics; Bergen Mail Routes and finally, the A-Z of Norwegian stamps.
As you can see from the copious photos below, the displays were excellent and covered a range of material which had something for everyone.
After the success of this meeting, I expect this will become a fixture in the forthcoming philatelic calendar.
