Togo – The first German Colony

Whilst most of us have one or two Togo stamps in our collections, very few will have realised just how short a period of time the country existed for, nor indeed the wonderful range of philatelic items that it helped to created in its short existence.

John Mayne gave us a great talk about the thirty years of Togo and we were fortunate enough to see the display that he had previously exhibited at Spring Stampex 2014 where it had been viewed by thousands of visitors.

The range and depth of material from the country was astonishing, as were the stories about how mail actually made it out of Africa, sometimes overland to other countries and sometimes by boats which were hailed by lit beacons on the beach.
